Our 1977 Reinell Runabout was purchased from its original owner in April 2001. The Rienel was always stored indoors. As a matter of fact the original owner didn’t even want to pull it out of his garage for us to look at for purchase, because it was supposed to be raining that day. Therefore the Reinell was in extremely good shape excluding some normal wear and tear that a summer-use runabout gets over the years.
Since then, everything on her has been replaced and has only 30 hours use; except for the hull & deck (of course) the windshield, the fuel tank, deck railing & anchor light. including all new wiring. A Marine Survey was performed, both at the time of purchase (in 2001) and another was purchased in May of 2025 where her value was estimated at a minimum of $34,000 & estimated building cost of $75,000.
Living quite close to Lake Stevens in WA State. We purchased the boat so we could spend quality time with our 2 children on the water, rather than chasing after endless softball games.
So the first modification to our Reinell was a custom “Cobalt Boats” inspired wake-wing that not only looks amazing, but turned the Reinell into a great wakeboard boat. The wing includes a complete subframe that runs under the deck & is bolted to the floor. In summer months we would be out on the lake several times a week, spending quality family time together that we now look back upon with great fondness.
For only 17’ this boat has classic lines that will never go out of style, and she has always been a “head turner”. She is also a well designed, very well constructed boat, that we never once felt unsafe in. Because she has always been stored out of the weather, she is as solid as the day she rolled out of the factory in 1977. The ¾” marine plywood floor is as solid as it was when new. Her hull is super stout and takes 50+ MPH jumps out of the water without a fuss. It is also great not to need a ¾ Ton Dually Pickup to take her to the lake, as she is light and nimble on or off the trailer.
Our 17’ Rienel was factory equipped with an OMC Outdrive and an OMC 302 Cubic Inch Ford Small block V8. This set up ran flawlessly for us for five years. Then the pinion gear in the outdrive decided to spit some teeth. After some research, it was decided that she was to receive an update to the outdrive system with a Mercruiser hydraulic outdrive, mated to a small block Chevy powerplant.
During the down-time the first major upgrade was a new EZ Loader trailer with 4 bunks custom fitted to the hull, then painted in super gloss black paint. The trailer also boasts custom wheels, a spare tire holder and all three tires were replaced in 2021 and should last for many more seasons.
The next upgrade was the dashboard, switches and gauges. The factory dash was replaced with a completely custom dash made from ¼’ aluminum. Custom switch plates, switches and gauge cutouts were CNC cut and then the panels were custom bent and welded together to create a “Baha Boats” inspired cockpit befitting a custom high performance Vessel. The Seven Lighted switch plates were custom labelled with nicknames as well as what the switches are for. (see closeup dash photo).
The custom dash was then filled with Purple and white Gaffrig gauges. The cockpit was upgraded with a Lavorsi GPS Speedometer in 2021, as well as a tilt steering helm, custom wheel and Hardin Marine, Billet Dual throttle control unit.
Next, the transom was modified and strengthened to facilitate the updated outdrive system. Also to complete the transformation ¼” Plate aluminum was added to the exterior side of the transom which adds an additional high performance look.
Years went by in storage, the Reinell and her owner survived an economic crash & a divorce after 20 years of marriage. Following that; there was renewed ambition to complete the transformation to this classic Reinell that she truly deserved.
In 2021 the 5.7 Liter (350 cubic inch) full roller Chevy small block was installed. New components include Comp Cams full roller camshaft & lifters, melling oil pump, ARP fasteners, ⅜” screw in studs, full roller rockers, MSD Billet Distributor, air gap intake manifold & edelbrock 650 cfm carburetor. Stock pistons and valves were retained. Although not dino’d, the engine develops approximately 285 HP without requiring High octane fuel. A Lavorsi Marine Billet External Oil Filter system was installed at the transom.
To reduce weight, Hardin marine aluminum exhaust manifolds were installed as well as Hardin Marine Captains Call Exhaust Diverters that feed into a custom built transom exhaust. With just a flick of a switch you can run quietly through the outdrive or make everyone else on the dock jealous when you start her up through the Hardin Marine 4’” exhaust exits. The MSD / 6M-3L Marine Ignition Control Module manages the ignition timing as well as protecting from overreving.
To help retain as much horsepower as possible a KRC Racing Billet Underdrive Accessories system was utilized which includes a billet power steering pump and was customised to facilitate the Powermaster Performance Marine Alternator. A new High Output OEM Mercruiser Starter cranks the engine. Custom stainless coolant lines feed the stainless steel thermostat housing, water pump & power steering cooler. This Engine compartment is as clean & Bright as they get!
Next; the still brand new 2013 Mercruiser Outdrive was brought out of storage and re-geared from 1.94:1 to 1.47:1. & new seals installed. Outdrive is currently mated to a 23 Pitch stainless three blade prop. Acceleration is exhilarating with top speed at 54-57 MPH depending on conditions. HOLD ON TIGHT! (See video showing speed and RPM taken in March of 2026).
Next up; complete new wiring with dual battery system, marine grade cabling throughout. Separate fuse blocks and breakers keep systems separated, smart charging units supply juice where it is needed automatically. New fuel sender installed in the fuel tank. High performance Holly Marine Fuel Pump was utilized. All electrical components are new except for the docking light fixture. Dual LED Volt Meters in the engine bay keep you constantly informed on what each battery voltage is.
Kenwood Marine Headunit, Kicker Marine Amplifier, custom built subwoofer box, satellite speaker boxes & 12” LED Subwoofer provide the tunes. Batteries, wiring & stereo equipment have all been put in specific locations to provide the best use of space, weight transfer & balance for the vessel.
No custom speed boat is complete without “Bitchin” Upholstery. When you own something for a long time you find ideas to make it better than the manufacturer did when they designed and built it. That was the case with the Rienell. So the interior was completely re-designed.
To start the process, she was outfitted with a pair of brand new Captain and Co-pilot seating from Chaparrel Boats. These amazing seats are fore-aft adjustable, they swivel and they have a swing up bolster that is perfect for the Reinell. Also the fore, under-deck area has a carpeted custom built shelf that utilizes all of the space above the fuel tank for storage. This storage area is great for water toys, personal flotation devices etc.
The original motorbox was replaced with a completely redesigned aft seating and engine compartment area. The new design utilizes modern components & is designed to be as light & strong as possible while withstanding rigorous use. All upholstery is made from the highest quality marine Vinyl and marine plywood. Seating is fixed and will not move or fly out during flight. The bench seat is readily removable, providing ample access to the engine compartment for winterizing and maintenance.
The custom built hatch is made from ⅝” Marine Plywood and aluminum Xbracing. The hatch is super strong, can hold the weight of a 300+ lb person without problem, but is still very light. The foam utilized on the hatch is a special Open Cell Foam that drains water quickly and is also light. To further reduce weight, the headrest pod bases are made from aluminum not plywood. They also give the appearance that Rienell is going 70 when she is idling at the dock!
Custom designed billet aluminum hinges were manufactured and provide ample access to the engine compartment. The custom built stainless gas struts lift the hatch with ease and keep it open, while the marine latches keep it from opening when you don’t want it to. To complete the interior, custom made side panels hold the Billet throttle control and arm rests & even the glove box is upholstered.
The only thing left was to provide an updated look to her exterior. As shown in some of the photos, the hull is in pristine shape but her 1977 blue gelcoat was looking a bit dated. The custom deck flames that were added in 2002 still look great and were not changed.
Just after her “Marine Survey” in May of 2025, (we wanted the surveyor to see the hull condition before wrapping) the blue portion of her hull was wrapped in Chrome-Matte Blue that looks amazing in or out of the water. Later, the factory aluminum gunnel molding and insert was wrapped in the same color giving her the updated modern finishing touch that makes her look amazing! Aside from her classic lines she looks brand new! Custom designed waterline and registration numbers in matte white add even more wow factor.
THIS CLASSIC RIENELL IS NOT A TYPICAL BOAT OFFERING.
Most vessels that are for sale, still have most of their aging-original parts and engineering waiting to be broken or replaced. They may have some new engine or outdrive parts, but overall they are still outdated and show it in many ways.
This Vessel has been carefully and completely re-imagined, redesigned, and custom built over the last 25 years and she will continue to be a timeless classic for many years to come.
