1040 16-foot Special Runabouts were produced from 1946-1949. Most of their hullsides and bottoms were cedar-planked and painted. Their mahogany decks, transom and ceilings were varnished. All of them had Chris-Craft British Red Tolex upholstery, Bleeker Street Red Marmoleum flooring and a red bottom and boot stripe. Three engines were offered: Hercules B and K, and Chrysler Crown. According to her hull plate, hull number, R-16-930, and the original hull card supplied by the Mariner’s Museum, this Special Runabout left the Chris-Craft plant in Algonac, MI, bound for Kingston, NY and her original owner, Benjamin Rhymes, on April 22, 1948. At some later time, she was sold to a family residing in the Thousand Islands region of New York, who ran her on the St. Lawrence River through the 1990’s. Purchased by her current owners in 2022. Snake Mountain Boatworks executed her comprehensive preservation-style restoration during 2023-2024 without replacing a single bit of original wood. Original 95HP Model-K engine fully rebuilt by Robert Henkel, 10 hours of runtime since completed. Original style upholstery completed by Mark's Upholstery. Gauges restored by Kocian. All hardware plated by D&S Custom Metal Restoration. Custom built trailer by Loadmaster. Rayco custom fabricated aluminum fuel tank. Custom made travel cover by The Recovery Room. Snake Mountain Boatworks completed the remaining work, including: Stripped all finishes off the entire hull, inside and out. Sealed all surfaces with four coats of Smith’s CPES. Applied three coats of Sandusky Paint Co. Chris-Craft Mahogany Bilge Paint to all interior surfaces. Stained the decks and transom with Mike Mayer’s (Loboat.com) post-war Chris-Craft J’eld stain. Applied thirty coats of Pettit High-Build and Captain’s Ultra Clear varnish to her decks, covering boards and transom, and twenty coats to her engine box and ceilings. Installed original-matching Bleeker Street Red Marmoleum on her floor panels. Installed a True 5200 Bottom with model-correct cedar planking. This 16' Special is ready to show and go!
